TAS website

A product microsite for of the international dormakaba group (CH:DOKA), TAS is a range of security solutions from electronic door control systems to remote video cameras.

Engaged by the Asia Pacific head office of the Swiss parent company, international marketing is managed out of Melbourne, Australia.

Digital Tsunami designed and developed a responsive web presence to present the TAS product range. After a dramatic slider on the welcome page, the site displays product and lifestyle images, features and specifications datasheets, searchable answers to frequently asked questions, partners and contacts.

As with all websites developed over the last fifteen years, the site is responsive; adapting to the width of the screen on which it is viewed from the largest desktop to the smallest smartphone. A detailed Guidelines for Use document was produced and remote training sessions conducted to enable the client to update all elements of the microsite.

In 2011, Digital Tsunami was engaged to create a brand identity and style guide, photography, and a video (in six language versions) for dormakaba subsidiary brand Wah Yuet.

KCC One identity

Katoomba Christian Convention (KCC) is an Australian not-for-profit interdenominational Bible-preaching convention ministry, founded in 1903.

At its Blue Mountains property, KCC runs multiple conventions each year for Australian and international attendees, including the Basecamp, Easter, KYCK, NextGen, OneLove, Onward and Oxygen events.

In preparation for the launch of a smartphone app and multiple convention websites, KCC needed a brand name and identity to provide coherence for each new digital presence. Digital Tsunami was entrusted with shepherding this new identity development, in close collaboration with the KCC team.

Considerable research was conducted into other Christian organisations and Christian convention centres in Australia, the UK and the USA. Particularly powerful brand names, icons and logos were compiled for the dual purposes of inspiration and avoidance of conflict with any proposed identities.

The KCC brandline of “All One in Christ Jesus” prompted the concept of a unifying “one” as the sub-brand. In consultation with the KCC team, this was further consolidated by combining it with the established brand to become “KCC One”.

Further reinforcement was achieved with a consistent corporate colour and the brandline “a digital initiative of KCC”.

Marketplace research was revisited in the context of this new name, to ensure there was no conflict or perceived derivation in the identity design, and to ensure ‘cut-through’ in a congested environment.

Creating a new identity for a startup (or reinventing or refining the identity of an established enterprise), is a process we call ‘The birth of a brand’.

Any brand identity is comprised of: a brand name (and domain name), logo, brandline, font, colour palette, ‘tone of voice’ and visual assets.

In addition to the concentrated efforts of two Digital Tsunami designers, we maximised creative input by inserting a detailed brief into a crowd-sourcing platform. Two hundred logo submissions were received and shortlisted designers were engaged and guided to refine their designs.

Simplicity in design is the goal. Good design is not about elaboration, but simplification .. until only the purest essence remains .. to convey the message most potently.

However, achieving simplicity requires considerable time and consultation with a diversity of stakeholders! After hundreds of hours of collective application to the task, a new identity was adopted by KCC.

Craig International Ballistics website

Craig International Ballistics is an innovative manufacturer of combat-proven body armour systems for defence force and police force personnel, ballistic glass and ballistic plates for aircraft, land transport and marine vessels. The company is ISO 9001 certified and has been producing security solutions since late last century.

Craig International Ballistics has manufactured ballistic panels for body armour and ships and ballistic-resistant windows for the Australian Bushmaster APC and the Chinook helicopter.

For the Australian Defence Force, Craig International Ballistics has supplied more than 100,000 Soft Armour Inserts (SAI) and hard ballistic plates (worn by troops in the conflict zones of Afghanistan, Iraq, and Timor L’Este), and is the largest supplier of police body armour in Australia.

A robust Research and Development division ensures that the company continually develops leading-edge armour systems. Craig International Ballistics has invested in (literally) cutting-edge technology, including an extreme high-pressure waterjet cutter, capable of slicing through steel.

Digital Tsunami was commissioned to develop a new responsive site to showcase these products and services online. As well as conveying corporate and product information, news and events, the site also presents considerable ballistics related information, including: a comprehensive glossary of terms; list of international stab and bullet resistant standards; FAQ; projectile impact videos and information on how to maintain personal body armour.

The responsive site automatically resizes to available browser width and orientation, on smartphones, phablets, tablets and desktops. Navigation adjusts from a pulldown menu on handheld devices to a horizontal main menu with individual pulldown submenus on desktops. Images resize and columns adjust (3, 2 or 1), subject to the precise width of the browser. A ‘footer nav’ offers an alternative form of navigation and a range of keywords and phrases, act as a valuable contributor to increased Google ranking.

In the past, Digital Tsunami has delivered multiple services to Craig International Ballistics, including identity, online, photography, print, and a video shot in Queensland and Victoria.

Empire hyperlapse

Accomplished Melbourne artist Rone spent a year designing and implementing an ephemeral immersive installation in the “Burnham Beeches”, a derelict 1930s streamline-moderne mansion on Melbourne’s outskirts.

After a six-week public exhibition, the property was to be returned to its original state with white walls and rooms cleared of the installed light and audio equipment, furniture, fittings, artworks, wallpaper, murals, penetrating trees and pervasive leaf litter.

In order to document the installation’s intrinsic impermanence, Rone decided to create a hyperlapse. He approached Digital Tsunami to organise the technology required, and so dolly track and a motion control rig and experienced operator were arranged.

In collaboration with Rone, lighting cameraman and editor Chris Matthews, and motion control rig operator Gerald Thompson, a sixty second hyperlapse sequence was choreographed. In synch to music, the camera panned, tilted and zoomed as it travelled along a twenty metre track, which was replicated more than sixty times. Two long tables in a dining hall and everything including the bar beyond were progressively removed.

In editing, Chris dissolved slowly between selected shots to convey the ephemerality of the installation as the room reverted from an immersive environment to a bare white shell.

Multiple matched cameras and a slider provided several viewpoints, intercut to emphasise the action.

Optim print collaterals

Optim has a reputation for facilitating solutions for internationally challenging, exceptionally valuable and critically time-sensitive logistics with a highly agile approach and exceptionally personalised service.

Digital Tsunami has closely collaborated with Optim to ensure branding consistency across all client touchpoints.

Firstly, Digital Tsunami refreshed the 1992 Optim identity. Secondly, electronic document templates were designed. Thirdly, business cards and A5 notepads were designed and printed, ‘wrap’ artwork for a prime mover designed, and office signage co-ordinated. Fourthly, Digital Tsunami developed the online presence and edited a dynamic video to convey the geographical and transport methods utilised in serving Optim clients.

The most recent deliverables included a high-end presentation folder and electronic templates for datasheets and case studies. These will be utilised for new business pitches and printed quotations.

By designing electronic templates, Optim’s investment is maximised, as they enable bespoke in-house customisation and on-demand printing.

The presentation folder was designed with powerful visuals and minimal text (logo and brandline only), to maximise shelf life, as future telephone or address changes will not render the folder redundant.

The folder was printed on stiff card with spot colour, matt lamination and a gloss spot UV finish, to maximise impact. An impressive image of a vast load of equipment on a tarmac awaiting aircraft loading, was printed on the inside of the folder and the document flaps, to maximise impact when opened.
