Hanas booklet design

The China energy sector is the world’s most active, following the central government’s initiatives to reduce emissions while powering dramatic growth. Despite a long-term reliance on coal, China has been the world leader in wind farm construction and is encouraging clean and sustainable power sources.

Based in the northern province of Ningxia, Hanas New Energy supplies millions of residential and business consumers with clean energy from natural gas, LNG and wind power. Expansion plans required both Chinese and English language print collaterals, video and photography.

Digital Tsunami founder Andrew W Morse was engaged as Creative Director of this extensive project. With 3 decades of experience working in greater China, Morse has the credentials to deliver high quality bilingual content from video and computer graphics to photography, online sites and print.

Embarking on this project, required the engagement of appropriate local resources based in Shanghai. Morse supervised the recruitment of a production team comprised of Chinese and English native speaking copywriters, graphic designer, video editor, executive assistant to the Creative Director and financial controller working under the aegis of the project Director. A sophisticated 4K video edit suite was custom built and installed in the 55th floor office of Hanas in Pudong.

To capture dramatic imagery of the locations and operations of Hanas, Morse briefed (and frequently accompanied) photography, aerial and video teams to numerous locations around the country.

In addition to producing evocative imagery, booklets were designed and printed for Hanas. These were based on a style guide and infographics developed by the Creative Director and graphic designer.

Since 2013, Digital Tsunami has produced photography, print, online and video solutions for the Hanas Group.

Hanas photography

Hanas New Energy is a low-carbon and renewable energy producer, which generates power from multiple wind farms, and distributes natural gas and LNG in China’s far northern province of Ningxia.

Utilising the best in European expertise and technologies, Hanas is in the vanguard of the sustainable energy production sector in the country. For years, Hanas has operated the most efficient LNG liquefaction plant in China.

In the Ningxia capital Yinchuan (and in nearby Inner Mongolia), Hanas is “Empowering China’s Energy Transformation”.

Digital Tsunami Creative Director, Andrew W Morse selected and briefed photographer Derryck Menere to capture the people, resources and textures of Hanas on multiple locations in and around Yinchuan. The evocative and powerful images were utilised in store, online and in print, to promote the corporation’s adherence to safety, efficiency and environmental health.

Huangpu River, Shanghai time-lapse

This time lapse captured on the morning of the double eleventh (November 11), 2016, demonstrates constant marine activity.

Shanghai is the largest city (by population) in the world, and has the world’s busiest container port.

From my office on the 55th floor, I was able to see 360 degree views of the city and apart from one stretch of water with wind towers, the skyline was entirely a built environment.

As this time lapse advances, tall shadows move across the river. These are shadows of three ‘skyscrapers’: Jin Mao Tower (421 m), Shanghai World Finance Centre (492 m), and Shanghai Tower (632 m), which together comprise the heaviest built environment on the planet!

Nevada run-flat test video

The RV (recreational vehicle) market in the USA is the world’s largest.

According to statistics published by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), almost 4,000 motorhomes (Type A, B and C) are shipped each month in the USA. When towable vehicles are included, the number is closer to 40,000 per month. In 2014, the North American recreational vehicles market stood at 345,000 units.

Statistics published by Globe Newswire on May 31, 2016, predicted a CAGR of 4.1% between 2014-2020. The industry, which was valued at USD 16 billion in 2014, is expected to reach USD 20.24 billion by 2020. The RV parks and campgrounds sector is valued at $5bn p.a.

One of the biggest risks in driving an RV can be a tyre blowout. In 21% of cases, this results in a rollover of the vehicle. View video example of a RV blowout and overturn.

Digital Tsunami was commissioned to produce a video to document the testing of a run-flat tyre. The objective was to convey the manufacturing capability, ISO 9001 certified processes, testing to international standards, and the quality of materials.

At a desert test track in western USA, a large RV and a SUV simulated blow outs by the proscribed method of explosives attached to the tyre. At 60 km/h, the tyre ruptured and shredded rapidly.

With a ‘run-flat’ solid rubber insert fitted tightly to the inner wheel rim, the vehicles were able to drive without damaging the rim and with the driver in total control. This allows the vehicle to be steered and slowed to the side of the road without swerving into traffic or leaving the road and overturning.

To achieve this objective, Andrew W Morse first determined to deliver the video in 4K resolution*. The visual concept and shooting schedule were prepared, approved and logistics to the remote Nevada test-track arranged.

A photographer, aerial camera operator and experienced local videographer (with whom the director had previously worked) were contracted. Due to advance planning and four 4K cameras on the side of the road and in & on the vehicles, broad coverage was achieved with just two trial runs and ‘blow-out’ tests.

Back in Australia, a music track with an appropriately high tempo was selected and the footage edited into a tight, powerful video.

*Digital Tsunami has been exclusively shooting 4K since 2014 and the company’s founder has been shooting film and video since 1979!

L J Hooker aerial photography

L J Hooker is a leading real estate agent which has operated in Australia for 88 years.

An L J Hooker franchise in the Hills district, has secured the agreement of residents in a single suburb to parcel a precinct for development.

Branded ‘Orange Blossom Heights’, the parcel will enable the development of both high and low-density housing, commercial and community spaces in a single project.

To present vistas of this exceptional parcel of land, Digital Tsunami was commissioned to produce aerial photography of the precinct and a panorama placing it in context of the greater Sydney metropolitan area and key local retail, sporting and transport facilities. To produce the panoramic image, 197 individual photographs were ‘stitched’ into a single high resolution vista.

Panoramic images were captured on the 4K camera of a DJI Inspire 1 UAV. An orientable 3D image was produced from the even higher resolution ‘direct-down’ overhead images of the precinct. This required considerable rendering, as it integrated 1.2 million data points, matching every four pixels at the macro level of leaves on the many trees in this established suburb!

The images were integrated into the print collaterals by Sydney design house Design Davey.

OneMusic NZ dynamic image panels

The Australasian Performing Right Association and the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owner’s Society, now collectively branded as (APRA AMCOS) is the prime body in Australia and New Zealand for the protection of the rights of music composers and performers.

Founded in 1926, the organisation manages music copyright across all media.

APRA AMCOS had launched an initiative in New Zealand with a contemporary responsive web presence. With the internal development team fully occupied with other tasks, Digital Tsunami was engaged to implement a dynamic system enabling multiple shapes, orientations and formats for home page linked panels.

Although a relatively minor task, to be entrusted with a critical functionality and to collaborate with the Sydney and Auckland based team-leads was a pleasure. Contributing even the smallest component to a contemporary and visually appealing site is professionally satisfying.

Craig Defence video

As a leading manufacturer of combat-proven body armour systems for defence force and police force personnel, ballistic glass and ballistic plates for aircraft, land transport and marine vessels Craig International Ballistics needs little introduction to armed forces in Australia. The company is ISO 9001 certified and has been producing security solutions since late last century.

However, all companies need to keep existing clients informed of recent developments and present their capabilities to national or international prospects.

Digital Tsunami was commissioned to produce a video to showcase the company. The objective was to convey the manufacturing capability, ISO 9001 certified processes, ballistics testing to international standards; and the quality of materials, personnel and practices.

To achieve this objective, Andrew W Morse first determined to deliver the video in 4K resolution. Secondly, an aerial camera operator and an experienced local videographer (with whom the director had previously worked) were contracted. Thirdly, the manufacturing complex was visited, to conceive a visual concept and plan the schedule for the shoot. Fourthly, a music track with an appropriately high tempo was selected. Fifthly, (because of the third step), we achieved a very high number of daily ’camera set ups’ (individual camera shots). Sixthly, we filmed in Melbourne at the test centre and shot six locations on the one property. Finally, the footage was edited into a tight, powerful three minute video.

The client was provided with both 4K and HD files, and uploaded an HD version of the video to Vimeo, which was embedded into the website.

Digital Tsunami developed a responsive web presence for Craig International Ballistics in 2014, after delivering a new identity.

Paths to Positiviti print

Paths to Positiviti is a Sydney based healthcare practice. Modalities offered include: Clinical Hypnotherapy, Strategic Psychotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

After several workshops, Digital Tsunami developed the brand name and identity and was commissioned to produce photography which represented the founder’s philosophy of renewal through behavioural change.

One particular image of a clean eucalypt tree trunk revealed beneath peeling, multi-coloured bark, perfectly evoked a fresh beginning and became a consistent visual. This image was common to the Paths to Positiviti business cards, brochures and website.

Adding to the uniqueness of the business cards was a single rounded corner. Cards were matt laminated on both sides, for durability and to enhance the tactile sense.

Master Residences office signage

The Master Real Estate sales office is located in the 5-star Kempinski Hotel Yinchuan, adjacent to the residential enclave.

To provide consistent branding and privacy for the office, a large glass wall is to be covered with a translucent film. Behind a branded strip featuring the logo and office signage, is the architect’s masterplan, similar to the front cover of the 250 page book “A Design Perspective”, supplied to prospective buyers.

The concept was conceived by Arlyna Blanchard of Yaean Design, Shanghai.

In mid 2015, Master Real Estate appointed Andrew W Morse to the role of Creative Director. He worked closely with the sales team, three photographers, aerial video production team, Digital Tsunami web developers, and Yaean Design to deliver an extensive range of print, press, online and video collaterals.

This project is a perfect example of the production of a cohesive marketing campaign across all digital and tactile media. The experience of the team at Digital Tsunami was perfectly suited to ensuring a consistent implicit and explicit message throughout all offline and online touchpoints.
